The LAC Preschool Program is designed to ensure our children have a happy, rewarding first school experience. You have probably heard the expression, ‘a child’s play is his work.’ You may also have read Robert Fulghum’s All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Both are true! Most of life’s most valuable lessons are learned very early on at our parents’ sides, and during our first school experiences. We believe play is the universal language of children; children learn best when they are able to feel, see, hear, smell, touch, and move within their world. Through play, children will learn and grow in all developmental areas.
You may wonder how your child’s experience in school encourages him/her reach his/her full potential. The opportunity to learn through play lays the foundation for future learning. As children are engaged with learning materials and with other children during the school day, they develop language, pre-reading and pre-writing skills. They develop social skills and learn to express their feelings and self-regulate. They develop dexterity needed for writing by using paintbrushes, crayons, and playing with small manipulatives. They develop an understanding for math and science concepts while playing with blocks or measuring ingredients for cooking. Through all of these learning accomplishments, they develop self-confidence.
Children have meaningful learning opportunities while in school, which help to strengthen a variety of skills. These include current events (morning meetings), music and movement (creative movement, rhythm, songs), physical activity (jumping, climbing, balancing, running) dramatic play (role playing, stories), self-care (hand washing, safety, manners, responsibility), and social skills (sharing, conflict resolution, empathy). All of these experiences provide children with learning opportunities to enhance their growth and self-confidence. These skills will be taken with them on their journey through life!
